Advocacy for Indigenous Empowerment
At MehiCentre, we are dedicated to promoting indigenous voices and empowerment through advocacy. Our goal is to amplify the voices of indigenous communities and their concerns in relation to climate change, mining and gas, water rights, native title and land rights. We believe Indigenous vices should be at the front driving discourse on issues regarding the climate and the environment. It is part of our Law to protect and look after our country so that following generations can thrive.
Climate Change
One of the most important issues facing indigenous communities. Aboriginal people are more exposed to the impacts of a heating climate than most, dure in part to social disadvantage and a failure of services. A heating climate will bring adverse changes to our environment and destruction of our sacred places.
Water Rights
Water was the first commodity the invaders took from us, since first colonisation, the condition of our water systems is not in good shape. Guli is the source of all life, both surface and underground as the Artesian water reserves are some of the best quality water in the world. We demand rights to access and use of our water systems.
Land Rights
While Native Title has delivered for some, not in NSW, with only 1% of the state handed over under non-exclusive rights. NSW has failed to deliver community lands for traditional owner groups. We demand real land handbacks so Aboriginal people can connect with country and strengthen connection to country and family.
